As We Are
“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.”- Isaiah 26:3
There is a musical I love dearly titled “Hadestown”, and I won’t give you a full synopsis, but there is a pivotal point in the story that sticks out to me. The main characters, Orpheus and Eurydice, are allowed to walk out of Hadestown under the jurisdiction of Hades, with Orpheus leading the way; however, if he turns around to see if Eurydice is there behind him even once, she is condemned to Hadestown forever. How many of us are living like Orpheus? We feel if we make one mistake that we will lose everything and that God and His love will abandon us. We walk through circumstances out of our hands, we are overcome with doubt in the hardest of seasons, and we feel God is distant. I’ve been there, and I’ve come to learn that’s not what the love of God looks like. God’s love is a redeeming love, it is an unconditional love, because here’s the thing: We are going to mess up, we are going to doubt, we are going to want control, we are going to desire our own path, we are going to go through seasons where trust seems impossible, but He is never distant, never waiting for you to jump through hoops to get back in good graces, He is right beside us, as He always will be, waiting for us to trust, to run into the arms of a love that conquered death, the grave, and every doubt we will ever have. God loves you, He created you, He has a plan for you, and He wants you as you are, right now, not in our perfect state, not as we want to be:
As we are.
